Zoological park located within Hermann Park is home to more than 4,500 animals belonging to over 900 species. Exhibits and facilities include a reptile and amphibian building, bird gardens, a duck lake, a tropical bird house, the Herbert A. and Elizabeth N. Kipp Memorial Aquarium, the Janice Suber McNair Asian Elephant Habitat, Wortham World of Primates and the Ethel G. and Allen H. Carruth Natural Encounters Building, featuring exhibits representing 7 different ecosystems, including the river's edge, rainforest, dry lands, coral reef, a bat cave, a turtle habitat and a meerkat habitat. The John P. McGovern Children's Zoo include a bat cave, bald eagle roost, and a glass-walled otter habitat, a petting zoo, a water playground and a wildlife carousel. Explore the new African Forest, a 6.5-acre site that recreates a wilderness habitat featuring chimpanzees, rhinos and giraffes in an environment reminiscent of the forest landscape of western equatorial Africa. Chill Out at the Houston Zoo provides 13 indoor, air-conditioned locations to chill out and relax.
