First Time Athlete?

It’s amazing how children seem to have a limitless supply of energy throughout the day. Many parents find it difficult to keep up with their growing toddler or energetic preschooler. A great way to harness your child’s energy and aim it at a constructive outlet is to get your child involved in a sporting activity. Learning the values of teamwork, discipline, and exercise are all excellent reasons to encourage your child to try out a new activity. It can be difficult to know where to start if your child has not yet participated in sporting activities, but the time and energy you place in helping your child choose an activity is worth the effort!

Consider the following simple steps to help you in the process:

Play with your child. This helps you figure out what really intrigues your child and what keeps his or her attention. Throw a football, swing a baseball bat, kick a soccer ball, and see if anything seems to interest your child. Keep in mind that some children may thrive best in an individual sport at first, such as tennis or golf, especially if they exhibit a strong-willed nature. Be sure to think outside the box from only choosing team sports.

One thing at a time.  It may be tempting to enroll your child in several activities at once to find which one fits his or her interest, but this will likely overstretch your schedule. When your child attempts something new, it’s important for a parent to have the time to be an available source of support. Try sticking to one new activity at a time. If it isn’t your child’s favorite activity there is nothing wrong with moving on to something else.

Model good sportsmanship in the home and at preschool or childcare. A child learns so much from observing the people around him. Raising a good sport happens long before your child puts on his first jersey or holds her first tennis racket. Be consistent in explaining and demonstrating behavior that is respectful toward others. Your child will take with him the lessons he’s learned off the field and translate these into the new sporting activity.

Of course, maybe your child isn’t into sports at all. Maybe she really loves to draw or sing. Hey, that’s cool too!
